home welcome how it all began recommendations our achievements the den our baby room and sleep room the main room outside play the snuggle den our approach the reggio approach the montessori method forest school baby and toddler forest school pre-school forest school extracurricular ballet cookery french letters and sounds food & menus the weaning process & special dietary requirements main menus prices applying for a place how to find us contact us navigation in our baby room we take a maximum of 6 babies each day. we have three consistent staff working across the baby room to ensure continuity of care. each of our staff look after a maximum of three babies, our third staff member covers lunches, holidays and lends a helping hand with extra activities such as outings and messy play. this means that your child will always be given the individual care and attention required. each baby has their own equipment (such as low chairs, cots and sleep suits) and a belongings basket, which is personal to them throughout their time at the nursery. each item will be clearly labelled with a laminated picture and ‘all about me’ sheet before your child’s arrival. this process of recognition will be important to your child during their time at simba’s den. our specially designed sleep/ quiet room will ensure that your child will be able to rest according to their own routine and our meal times can be adapted to suit individual requirements. our main play room and sleep room is designed with a strong reggio influence. we believe strongly that the environment in which children are cared for should be naturally beautiful to aid development. typically baby rooms are bright noisy and cluttered with lots of primary colour’s and plastic toys. however, research has shown that these environments are extremely uninspiring to babies and can actually cause stress and frustration. at simba’s we recognize our environment for its potential to inspire children. our environment is filled with natural light, order and beauty. you will see our open spaces free from clutter, where every material is considered for its purpose, every corner is ever-evolving to encourage children to delve deeper and deeper into their interests. our environment is therefore also ever changing in accordance to children’s current development and play topics. throughout the nursery day, alongside exploring and play topics our babies are taught baby sign language. the ability to communicate... mark (parent): “my 14month old son has come on so well. he has a good group of friends and the staff have been amazing with his self-confidence. i couldn’t ask for anything more from them. my son is always happy when i pick him up, and it’s lovely to receive photos throughout the day to see what he’s doing. they know what he likes to play with and have an excellent bond with him. i wouldn’t send him anywhere else.” kayleigh (parent): “i fell in love with simba’s even before alice was born and they have not let me down. alice is nearly two and i can pretty much have a conversation with her, she can do sign language and will try any food that is put in front of her – i strongly believe this is down to the staff and children at simba’s den and i look forward to watching my little girl develop into one of the other bright polite children i see at nursery – great job guys keep it up.” sarah (parent): “brilliant nursery! my two have come on so much since being at simba’s den! all the staff are friendly and great with the children. couldn’t ask for a better nursery for my two. harvey is more than ready for school in september and that’s all down to the staff preparing him! letters and sounds classes are a big hit too.” jacob (parent): “i couldn’t ask for more from a nursery than what simba’s den provides. my two children have both thrived from the environment and staff. we have to drive some distance to enable us to use simba’s den but it is truly worth it – they are safe, happy, content and extremely well cared for.” james (parent): “i love the smallness and closeness of simba’s, the staff are just brilliant and i feel like i am leaving my daughter with friends rather than at a nursery; just priceless.” marie (parent): “i love the small personal feel simba’s... our outside play philosophy and area has become a huge talking point amongst parents since we opened. it is an area which has been built, extended and improved upon massively. most importantly it’s a huge talking point for the children who have been little designers and influenced each decision we made. i am convinced we have some budding architects on our hands and i must say they did a better job than i could have done (phew)! our area started off pretty small, i can remember being really disappointed when we first opened – but actually looking back it has really worked in our favor as we have been able to carefully observe and ask the children how they would like the play space to look. when we extended our outside area the children designed their own drawings of what they wanted – amongst the designs were a roller coaster (harry 3:4) a garden area (ben 3:5) a magical unicorn (jodie 2:9) a sand pit (william 2:11) and a shelter for when it rains (toby 2:10). of course we would have liked to have opted for the roller coaster and unicorn – but health and safety legislation got in our way! i took the children’s designs to our planning meetings. for example, toby (2:10) had specifically said that the shelter would be best placed outside the back door so no water could get through! and william (2:11) wanted a rectangle sand pit which was very deep for treasure. after a few months the outside area was complete with a new shelter, sand pit and garden area amongst others – or so we thought! but the love for voicing options and seeing their ideas come to life was going to be an inherent thread which has not left us since (and i hope it never does). the children loved the new space and new areas and played wonderfully in the area. one day toby p (3:10) was in the building... i went through my nvq and post graduate qualification without being introduced to the reggio approach. a few years ago i stumbled across a reggio quote and have been hooked ever since! during my research i came across reflections nursery in worthing who offer professional training days; i had the privilege to have a forest school training session with martin pace and can honestly say it was the most influential training day i have ever attended. reflection professional days now forms part of our yearly training program at simba’s and we thank them so much for sharing their practice and knowledge with us. our interpretation of the approach follows. the reggio emilia approach originates from northern italy and was created by loris malagluzzi after world war ii. the reggio theory places the child at the center of the practice and views the child as capable, competent and confident. it encourages children to explore; viewing teachers as facilitators not directors of learning. through deeply listening and tuning into their thoughts we can create project based play where anything becomes possible. throughout the project based play staff and children document and value others; documentation takes many forms from photos to words to drawings to displays. this documentation acts as a planning resources for staff to effectively plan; ensuring the right tools, resources and environment is available for children to reach their full potential with as many ‘real life’ experiences as possible along the way. some of our project topics have been fairies, the sand house, the outside area, the snuggle den, our nativity play, hair dressers, pirates, magic potions, conkers, lights and shadows and the water fountain. some projects lasted for weeks, others for months and some still... “a hazard is something a child does not see. a risk is a challenge a child can see and chooses to undertake or not. eliminating risk leads to a child’s inability to assess danger” what is forest school? forest schools originated in scandinavia in the 1950’s. since 1995 forest schools in the uk have grown in popularity with many early years’ workers and primary school teachers seeing the huge benefits of forest school learning for all children. most recently this has seen a huge emergence in special educational needs schools and continues each year to benefit pupils all over the world. “forest school is an inspirational process, that offers children and young people opportunities to achieve, develop confidence and self-esteem, through hands on learning experiences in a local woodland environment.” our forest school grew in april 2012 from staff’s desire to provide a curriculum at simba’s den which reflected the naturally stunning area in which the nursery is situated. through the forest school and other environmentally-based initiatives, children attending simba’s den are able to develop a lifelong love and understanding of the natural environment, whilst developing the core purposes of the forest ethos, namely, development of self-esteem, confidence and social skills. through carefully planned activities, all children have the opportunity to take part in the forest school which enables children to excel in all areas of their personal, social and emotional development. at simba’s den, we operate our forest school on two sites. the first site is the base camp within fineshade wood (children 3+). our secondary site is bulwick village centre green, which is suitable for the 2-3 year age group. the freedom of the ‘forest’ allows the children the opportunity to experience a realistic experience in which they are able to practice their skills and further develop their understanding of a woodland environment. it raises expectations and develops insights into individual learning styles and schemas. our forest school aims to develop: • self awareness • self regulation • intrinsic... our ballet classes at simba’s den are extremely popular with the children. the lessons take place every monday from 10:00 – 11:00. due to the popularity we have split the group into two classes, the 2-3 year olds participate from 10:00 – 10:30 and the 3+ age group from 10:30 – 11:00. the lessons run from the old school hall just two doors down from the nursery and are led by kim and becki who have worked at nursery since we opened. kim is a qualified dance teacher who leads numerous ballet and tap dance classes in corby during the evenings. becky is a grade 8 qualified dancer who loves teaching the children various positions and dances. when children start the ballet classes we focus on lots of fun music and movement listening games. they begin with a small warm up which consists of good toes naughty toes and choosing a colour for an imaginary ball which we throw up, catch and place on different parts of our bodies. we then do a mixture of fun rhymes, balancing and ribbon skills. we also go to pretend worlds, such as the dinosaur world or under the sea, and move to the music playing. when children are ready we begin to introduce positions through fun games such as musical ballet statues. as children progress through to pre-school ballet they benefit from the same warm up; but it’s slightly longer and includes a short discussion as to why we warm up before dance. children get used to standing in lines/ stage positions and continue to learn more ballet positions. in addition they learn about other dances; for example when we did our ‘around the world topic’ the children enjoyed researching and learning spanish and irish dances. children at the end of each session have the opportunity to explore free dance and express themselves to the music played. the pre-school children perform a dance 3 times a year to parents. one at christmas,... 0 1 2 3 4 5 simba's den is an award winning small, family run nursery in the heart of northamptonshire. latest adventures take a look at some of our highlights over the past year at simba's den. this year for our nativity play we decided to... august is always a sad time for us at simba’s... when children reach pre-school age they begin... welcome to simbas den website welcome to our website;
